Serves/Makes: 12
Ready in: 2-5 hrs

***Brownies***

  • 3/4 cup sifted flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/3 cup vegetable shortening
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 1 package semisweet chocolate pieces
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 1/2 cup coarsely chopped walnuts
  • 1/4 cup golden rum or orange juice

***Orange Frosting***

  • 1/3 cup butter or margarine, softened
  • 2 cups confectioners' sugar
  • 2 tablespoons orange juice
  • 1 teaspoon orange rind

***Chocolate Icing***

  • 1 package (6 ounce size) semisweet chocolate chips
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable shortening

Sift flour, baking soda and salt onto wax paper. Combine sugar, shortening and water in a medium-size saucepan. Heat, stirring constantly, until sugar melts and mixture comes to boiling.

Remove from heat; stir in chocolate pieces and vanilla until smooth. Beat in eggs, one at a time. Stir in flour mixture and walnuts. Spread evenly in 9 x 9 x 2-inch greased pan.

Bake in a moderate oven at 325 degrees F for 30 minutes or until shiny and firm on top. Remove from oven; sprinkle rum or orange juice over top; cool completely.

Spread Orange Frosting smoothly over top; chill until firm. Spread Chocolate Icing over frosting; chill. Remove from refrigerator about an hour before serving. Cut into squares.

For Orange Frosting: Beat butter and orange rind in small bowl until creamy. Gradually beat in sugar alternately with enough of the orange juice to make it spreadable.

For Chocolate Icing: Combine chocolate chips and vegetable shortening in the top of a double boiler. Set over hot, not boiling, water until melted.
