3 large eggs
1 1/2 c. light cream or half & half cream (or you may use whole milk)
2 Tbsp. packed brown sugar (light or dark)
1 tsp. pure vanilla extract
1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon
⅛ tsp. ground nutmeg
Eight 1/2-inch thick slices of French, Italian, Challah or Country Bread
4 Tbsp. unsalted butter
Optional: a sprinkle of confectioner’s powdered sugar
Warmed Caramel Sauce or maple syrup for serving

In a wide bowl, whisk together items 1-6 together until well blended. In it, dip bread slices to moisten. In a large non-stick frying pan over medium-low heat, melt half of the butter. Slowly fry 4 slices of the dipped bread for several minutes on both sides until golden. Repeat with the remaining butter & dipped bread.

If desired, sprinkle tops of the French toast with a little confectioner’s sugar. Serve hot with either the caramel sauce or maple syrup. Serves 4

Optional
Homemade Caramel Sauce For French Toast
1 c. water
3 c. sugar
1/2 tsp. cream of tartar
1 1/2 c. heavy cream

In a 2-quart saucepan, bring items 1-3 to a boil. Brush sides of pot with water as necessary to prevent crystallizing. Heat mixture until golden caramel in color. Remove from heat and slowly whisk in the heavy cream. Serve sauce warm. Serves 4
