Makes 2 dozen

1 pkg. dry yeast
2 tsp. sugar
1/4 cup lukewarm water
1/2 cup shortening
1/4 cup sugar
1/4 tsp. salt
2 eggs
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
1 cup milk, scalded
4-5 cup flour
oil for deep frying
1 lb confectioners' sugar
1 1/2 Tbsp. butter
1 cup milk
2 tsp. vanilla extract

Dissolve yeast and 2 tsp sugar in 1/4 cup lukewarm water. Cream shortening, 1/4 cup sugar, salt, eggs and 1/2 tsp vanilla in mixer bowl. Add 1 cup scalded milk; cool to lukewarm. Add yeast. Mix in flour gradually until dough cleans side of bowl.
Knead of floured surface until smooth and elastic. Place in greased bowl; turn to grease surface. Let rise until doubled in bulk.
Roll 1/4 inch thick on floured surface; cut into 1 1/2x7-inch strips. Fold in 1/2 over 1 finger forming loop and twist ends together; place on waxed paper. Let rise for 10 minutes.
Deep fry at 400 F for 3-5 minutes or until golden brown. Drain on paper towels; place on wire rack. Combine confectioners' sugar, butter and 1 cup milk in bowl; beat until smooth. Add 2 tsp. vanilla. Spread over twists.
