Serves/Makes: 4
Ready in: < 30 minutes

  • vegetable oil, enough to fill a pan 4-inches deep
  • 1 large red onion, sliced very thin
  • 1 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon curry powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt

Heat the oil in a deep pan or deep fryer to 350 degrees F.

Place the sliced onion in a bowl. Combine the flour, cayenne, curry powder, cumin, pepper, and salt in a small bowl. Mix well then toss the flour mixture with the onions.

Shake off any excess flour from the onions and place the onions, in batches, in the hot oil. Do not overcrowd the onions. Cook for 3-4 minutes or until golden brown. Remove the onions with a slotted spoon and let drain on paper toweling. Repeat with remaining batches.

Serve the spicy battered onions hot with ketchup, ranch dressing, or other dipping sauce, if desired.
