1 1/2 cup water
1 1/2 cup sugar
4 Tablespoons butter
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/3 cup cornstarch
4 eggs, separated
2 teaspoon lemon rind, grated
1/4 cup lemon juice
9 inch pie shell baked

In a heavy saucepan, combine sugar, 1 cup water and butter, and heat until sugar is dissolved. Blend cornstarch with the remaining water and add slowly to the mixture and cook on low until clear, about 8 minutes.
Beat egg yolks and add slowly to the cornstarch mixture. Cook 3 more minutes, stirring constantly. Remove from heat and add lemon juice and lemon rind. Pour into baked pie shell and top with meringue.

Meringue
Beat egg whites with 1/4 teaspoon salt, and 1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar until foamy. Slowly add 2/3 cup sugar and beat until it holds a stiff peak. Bake 10 to 12 minutes at 375 degrees.
