1/4 cup packed brown sugar, shortening and softened butter
1 egg, separated
1/2 tsp vanilla
1 cup flour
1/4 tsp salt
3/4 cup finely chopped nuts
1 (14 oz) bag chocolate kisses

Preheat oven to 350. Cream sugar, shortening, butter and egg yolk. Blend in dry ingredients. Roll dough into 3/4 inch balls, beat egg white with fork, dip balls in whites and roll in nuts. Place on ungreased cookie sheets 1 inch apart. Press a kiss in center of each ball. Bake 10-12 minutes. Do not touch kiss until the cookies have cooled completely on a wire rack.
