Makes 6 servings.

1 lb. lean ground beef
1 lb. sausage meat
2 T. vegetable oil
1 med. onion, minced
2 cloves garlic, minced
2 slices day old bread (crusts trimmed)
1/4 c. finely chopped parsley
1/4 c. dry red wine
1 egg, beaten
1 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. black pepper
1/4 tsp. allspice
1/2 tsp. thyme
1 bay leaf
3 slices bacon
1 7-oz. can tomato sauce

Preheat oven to 350F.
Line a 4 x 9-inch loaf pan with foil.
Heat oil in medium saucepan and saute onion and garlic until soft and transparent.
Place meats in large mixing bowl.
Crumble the bread into fine crumbs and sprinkle over meat.
Add onion, parsley, wine, egg, salt, pepper, allspice and thyme. Mix thoroughly.
Pack the meat loaf mixture loaf pan. Place bay leaf on top of meat and cover with bacon slices. Place loaf pan on baking sheet.
Bake at 350F for 1 1/2 hours.
Heat tomato sauce and serve with sliced meat loaf.
