Serves/Makes: 4
Ready in: < 30 minutes
- 8 ounces uncooked penne or ziti pasta or pasta of choice
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 2 tablespoons finely chopped onion
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- 16 ounces tomato sauce
- 6 ounces tomato paste
- 3 ounces Jack Daniel's whiskey
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon dried basil
- 1 cup half and half or heavy cream
- salt and pepper, to taste
- freshly grated Parmesan or Romano cheese
Cook the pasta in boiling water until al dente. Drain well. Meanwhile, combine the butter, onion, and garlic in a saucepan over medium heat. Cook until the onion is soft, about 5 minutes. Stir the tomato sauce, tomato paste, Jack Daniels, sugar, and basil into the onion mixture. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat then reduce the heat to a simmer. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 10 minutes. Remove the pan from the heat and whisk in the half and half. Cover the pan and let the sauce sit for 2 minutes or until heated through. Season the sauce to taste with salt and pepper. Toss with the pasta and serve hot, topped with freshly grated cheese, if desired.
