Crust
2 oz semi-sweet chocolate
6 tbsp butter
1/2 cup sifted flour
1 cup quick-cooking oats
1/8 tsp baking soda
1/2 cup packed brown sugar


Filling
3 oz unsweetened chocolate
2/3 cup stirred flour
1/4 tsp salt and baking powder
1/2 cup unsalted butter, room temperature
1 cup sugar
3 large eggs
1 1/4 tsp vanilla extract
2/3 cup walnut pieces

Chocolate layer
1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
1 tbsp butter


In a small pan within a larger pan over simmering water, melt chocolate and 6 tbsp butter. Mix well until smooth and satiny.

Combine the next 4 ingredients; mix well. Pour melted chocolate into the dry mixture and mix thoroughly. Spray a 9 inch square pan and pat in mixture. Bake for 12 minutes. Cool, about 20 minutes, on a rack.

Meanwhile, melt unsweetened chocolate. Combine the next 3 ingredients; mix well; set aside. Cream the 1/2 cup butter until fluffy. Gradually add sugar, beating until light and creamy. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Add vanilla extract and pour melted chocolate into the mixture and mix thoroughly. Add the dry ingredients and mix well. Pour over the crust and bake for 30-35 minutes . Cool in the pan on a rack 6 hours or overnight.

Melt chocolate chips and butter and spread a thin layer over the top of the brownie. Cool or chill until firm before cutting.
