From a nice lady who takes this to church luncheons and other social gatherings. It's probably a traditional recipe, and simply wreaks of the wonderful old Deep South.

5 medium yellow squash
1/2 cup chopped onion
1/2 cup chopped green bell pepper
1/2 cup mayonnaise
1 egg
1 Tbsp salt (? I say use a tsp!)
1/2 cup grated cheese (or cream cheese)
1 stick butter
1/2 cup breadcrumbs

Stew or steam the squash until tender. Drain and mash. Reserve half the cheese and breadcrumbs, adding remaining ingredients to squash. Top with reserved crumbs and cheese. Bake at 350 for 40 minutes. Serves 6.
