Iowa Applesauce Cake (govs mansion recipe)

1/2 cup butter
3/4 cup sugar
3/4 cup packed brown sugar
1 egg
2 cups all-purpose flour
2 tsps baking powder
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp ground cloves
1 1/2 cups applesauce
1 cup raisins
1/2 cup chopped walnuts or pecans
cream cheese frosting (recipe follows)

In a large mixing bowl, beat the butter for 30 seconds. Add the sugars and egg; beat till combined.
Stir together the dry ingredients. Add flour mixture alternately with applesauce to butter mixture.
Stir in raisins and nuts. Turn batter into a greased 13x9x2-inch baking pan, spreading evenly.
Bake in a 350 degree oven for 30-35 minutes or till a toothpick comes out clean. Cool in pan on wire rack.
Prepare the cream cheese frosting. Spread over cake.
serves 12

Cream Cheese Frosting: In a mixing bowl, beat together two 3-oz pkgs softened cream cheese, 1/2 cup softened butter and 2 tsps vanilla till light and fluffy. Gradually beat in 2 cups sifted powdered sugar to make a spreadable frosting.
For a decorative finish, set a paper doily lightly on the frosted cake, then sprinkle with a mixture of ground cinnamon and nutmeg. Carefully remove doily.
