Heavenly Almond Bars

8 oz. blanched almonds
1/2 c. sugar, softened
1/3 c. sugar
3 egg yolks
2 t. baking powder
1/8 t. salt
1 1/2 c. flour
3 egg whites
1/2 c. sugar
1 t. almond extract
Process almonds in food processor with knife blade until finely ground, 20 seconds. Set aside.
With knife blade, add butter, sugar, egg yolks, baking powder and salt, process about 15 seconds.
Add flour. Pulse to mix - 5 - 6 pulses. Spread and pat into ungreased 9 inch baking pan.
With mixer, beat egg whites until stiff, not dry. Gradually add sugar and almond extract. Fold almonds in by hand. Stir to thoroughly mix. Pour mix over bottom layer. Bake 25 - 30 minutes at 350 degrees. Cut into bars while warm.
