1 1/2 lbs broccoli, divided into florets and stalks
1 tbsp olive oil
2 medium red onions, slivered
8 cloves garlic, minced
1 tbsp butter and grated lemon zest
2 tbsp lemon juice
3/4 tsp salt
1/2 tsp pepper

Peel the broccoli stalks and cut crosswise into 1/2-inch pieces. In a steamer, cook the broccoli stalks and florets until crisp-tender, 5 to 8 minutes. Transfer to a serving bowl.

Meanwhile, in a large nonstick skillet, heat the oil over medium-high heat. Add the onions and garlic, and cook until the onions begin to brown, about 6 minutes. Remove the skillet from the heat and stir in the butter, lemon zest, lemon juice, salt and pepper. Stir to melt the butter. Pour the onions and sauce over the broccoli and toss to coat. Serve warm or at room temperature. Serves 6
