CHEESE AND BROCCOLI DISH

12 slices white bread
3/4 lb sharp American cheese, grated (save about 1/4 cup to sprinkle on finished casserole)
1 10 oz pkg frozen chopped broccoli, cooked and drained or 1 lb can asparagus spears, drained
2 cups diced cooked ham
6 eggs, slightly beaten
3 1/2 cups milk
2 tbsp instant or freshly minced onion
1/2 tsp salt (omit if ham is salty)
1/4 tsp dry mustard
Cut bread with a doughnut cutter. Set bread circles aside and fit the scraps of bread into the bottom of a 13x9x2 inch baking dish. Layer over bread: cheese, broccoli, and ham, in that order. Arrange bread doughnuts and holes on top.
Combine eggs, milk, onion, salt, and mustard. Pour mixture over casserole. Cover and refrigerate at least 6 hours or overnight. Bake uncovered at 325 degrees for 55 minutes. Let stand 10 minutes before cutting into squares for serving. Sprinkle with shredded cheese 5 minutes before end of baking time.
