ASPARAGUS CHEESE STRATA

1 1/2 lb fresh asparagus, cut into 2 inch pieces
3 tbsp butter, melted
1 lb loaf sliced bread, crusts removed
3/4 cup shredded cheddar cheese, divided
2 cups cooked cubed ham
1/4 cup sliced green onions
6 eggs, beaten
4 oz can sliced mushrooms, drained
2 cups milk
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 tsp dry mustard

In a medium saucepan, cover asparagus with water; cover and cook until just tender but stiff firm. Drain and set aside. Lightly brush butter over one side of bread slices. Place half of bread, butter side up, in a greased 13x9 inch baking dish. Sprinkle with 1/2 cup cheese. Layer with asparagus, ham and mushrooms. Cover with remaining bread, buttered side up.

In a bowl, lightly beat eggs. Add remaining ingredients and pour over bread. Cover and refrigerate overnight. Bake, uncovered, at 350 for 50 minutes. Sprinkle with remaining cheese. Return to oven for 10 minutes or until cheese is melted and a knife inserted near the center comes out clean.
