NORTH CAROLINA BBQ BAKED BEANS

1 (15 oz) can each kidney beans and butter beans, both drained in a colander and washed under cold water
2 tbsp butter
3 bacon strips, cut into pieces
1 1/2 cups chopped red onion
1/3 cup bbq sauce
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
1 tbsp white cider vinegar
1/4 lb grated Monterey jack cheese
2 small ham hocks

In a Dutch oven, melt butter and add bacon and onions. Saute until onions are soft. Add beans and remaining ingredients. Stir gently and bake, uncovered for 1 hour. Allow to rest for 20 minutes. Remove ham from hocks and stir back into the beans.
