PENNE PASTA WITH SPICY SAUSAGE, TOMATO AND CREAM SAUCE

1 1/2 tsp olive oil
1 1/2 lbs mild Italian sausage, casing removed
1 tsp dried red pepper flakes, or to taste
3/4 cup diced onion
1 1/2 tsp minced garlic
1/4 cup flour
1 (28 oz) can plum tomatoes, drained and chopped
2 cups whipping cream
1 lb penne, cooked al dente, drained
While pasta is cooking, heat oil in a skillet and crumble sausage into it. Add red pepper flakes and stir to combine. Saute until sausage is cooked through, about 7-10 minutes. Add onion and garlic, continue to cook, stirring occasionally, for 5-7 minutes. Add flour and stir to absorb liquid. Add tomatoes and cream. Simmer until mixture thicken slightly, about 4 minutes. Add drained pasta to sauce.
