FROSTED SUGAR COOKIES

1 cup solid vegetable shortening
2 cups sugar
3 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 cup sour cream
5 cups flour
1 teaspoon salt
Frosting (see recipe)
In large bowl, cream together shortening and sugar. Beat in eggs and vanilla.
In separate bowl, dissolve baking soda in sour cream.
In another bowl, combine flour and salt.
To the shortening/sugar/egg mixture, alternate adding flour mixture and sour cream mixture, mixing thoroughly after each addition. Cover and chill overnight.
Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Roll out dough on floured surface (dough will be loose) to 1/4-inch thickness and cut out shapes. Bake on ungreased cookie sheet 8 to 10 minutes until edges just start to brown. Let cool, then decorate with frosting.
Frosting:
1/4 cup (1/2 stick) butter, melted
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
2 tablespoons milk
Sifted powdered sugar
In large bowl, whisk butter, vanilla and milk. Whisk or beat in powdered sugar until desired frosting consistency is reached. (Start with 2 cups and add more from there.)
