SPICY MAPLE CHICKEN BARBECUE SAUCE

1 1/4 cup ketchup
3/4 cup apple cider vinegar
2 white onions, minced
2 1/2 cup chicken broth
1/2 cup real maple syrup
2 tbsp margarine
2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
1 tbsp Dijon mustard
1 tsp red pepper flakes (or to taste)

Combine all ingredients in a medium, non-reactive saucepan. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat. Simmer about 50 minutes, stirring occasionally, until thickened and reduced.
