Base
2 cups flour
¾ cup packed brown sugar
1 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp baking soda
3/4 cup butter
2 cups chopped peeled tart apples, about 2 medium
1 egg, slightly beaten
Topping
3/4 cup packed brown sugar
1/2 cup finely chopped pecans or walnuts
2 tbsp butter
2 tbsp honey and milk
1 cup frozen whipped topping, thawed
Heat oven to 350. Spray a 9 inch square pan with cooking spray. Combine first 4 base ingredients; mix well. With a pastry blender, cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in apples and egg; mix well. Press mixture firmly in bottom of sprayed pan. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until puffed in center.
In a small saucepan, combine all topping ingredients except whipped topping. Cover over medium heat; until mixture comes to a boil; stirring frequently. Boil 1 minute. Remove from heat.
Remove base from oven. Drizzle top topping over warm base; spread evenly. Return to oven; bake an additional 4-6 minutes or until topping is bubbly. Cool 1 1/2 hours or until completely cooled. With a serrated knife; cut into squares. Serve with whipped topping.
