ASPARAGUS HAM CASSEROLE

2 pkg frozen asparagus spears
1 1/2 cups cubed ham pieces
1/4 cup (1/2 stick) + 1 tbsp butter
4 tbsp all-purpose flour
2 cups milk
1 cup grated Cheddar cheese
1/4 tsp salt
1/2 cup plain dry bread crumbs

Preheat oven to 350. Cook asparagus about 5 minutes or according to package directions. Place drained, cooked asparagus spears into an 9 inch square baking pan. Sprinkle ham cubes evenly over asparagus.

Prepare white sauce: melt 1/2 stick of butter in a medium saucepan; add flour and blend; add milk gradually, cook slowly over medium heat stirring constantly until thickened. Add cheese and salt to sauce and stir to mix.

Pour sauce over asparagus and ham, sprinkle with breadcrumbs and dot with the tbsp of butter. Bake 20-25 minutes or until bubbly and lightly browned. Serves 4
