CARAMEL FILLING

4 cups sugar
1 tbsp vanilla extract
1 cup milk
1 tbsp corn syrup
1 cup butter
1 tsp baking soda
2 tsp vinegar

Brown 1 cup sugar in a skillet. Combine milk and remaining sugar in a double boiler. Bring to a boil; add browned sugar and corn syrup. Cook until soft ball stage. Cook just a little longer; add butter, flavoring, baking soda, and vinegar. Cool. Whip until spreading consistency.
