CABBAGE CASSEROLE

1 head cabbage, shredded
1 tsp salt
1/4 cup butter
3 cups basic white sauce, recipe follows
2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
1 1/2 cups buttered bread crumbs

Cook shredded cabbage for 5-87 minutes in boiling water with 1 tsp salt. (Cabbage should remaining crisp.) Drain well. Layer cabbage in buttered 2 quart casserole dish: cabbage, enough sauce to cover, second layer of cabbage, remaining cheese and then sauce. Top with butter crumbs and bake at 300 for 15-20 minutes.

Basic White Sauce
1 cup butter
3 tbsp flour
Salt and pepper, to taste
1 quart milk

Melt butter in saucepan. Add flour, salt and pepper. Gradually add milk and cook until thick, stirring constantly.
