HUNGARIAN BEEF CASSEROLE

1/2 cup butter
4 lb stew meat, cut into 1 inch cubes
1 tsp salt
1/4 tsp pepper and thyme
2 cans cream of mushroom soup
1 clove garlic, minced
3 cups sliced onion
2 cups sliced mushrooms
1/4 tsp hot pepper sauce
1/2 cup sherry
1 1/2 to 2 cup sour cream
1/4 tsp cracked pepper
Cooked rice
Melt 1/4 cup butter in a Dutch oven and add meat, one-third at a time, and brown on all sides. Remove and sprinkle with salt, pepper thyme. Spooon soup over top. Preheat oven to 375.
Heat remaining butter in a skillet and saute garlic, onions and mushrooms until golden. Pour over soup. Add 1/4 cup water and the hot sauce to the skillet; bring to boiling, stirring to dissolve the bronwed bits in the pan. Pour over onion.
Bake, covered, 45 minutes. Remove cover; pour sherry over mixture. Bake, uncovered, 35 minutes. Add sour cream; sprinkle with cracked pepper; stir gently until blended. Bake, uncovered, 10 minutes longer. Serve over rice. Serves 10 to 12
