3/4 cup self-rising flour
1/4 cup cornmeal
1/4 tsp salt and pepper
3/4 cup milk
3-4 green tomatoes, cut 1/4 inch thick slices
Vegetable oil

Combine first 5 ingredients and mix until smooth. Add additional milk if necessary to thin. (Should be the consistency of pancake batter.) Working in batches, dip tomato slices into batter, allowing excess batter to drip back into bowl. Fry in 2 inches hot oil in a heavy skillet until browned, turning each slice over carefully with tongs. Transfer to drain on paper towels. Serves 4-5
