CARAMELIZED ONION DIP

1 tbsp unsalted butter and oil
1 large red onion, sliced
2 tbsp garlic, minced
1/2 cup sour cream and mayonnaise
1/4 tsp salt and cayenne pepper
1 tsp red pepper flakes
1/2 tsp Tabasco sauce

Saute onions in butter and oil until caramelized, about 20 minutes, stirring in garlic for approximately 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Cool and combine the remaining ingredients. Mix well and chill for at least 1 hour. Serve with crackers or chips.

Variation: Can add 1 bunch chopped green onions and 1 (10 oz) box frozen spinach, thawed and squeezed dry when adding remaining ingredients.
