BROCCOLI AND CAULIFLOWER AU GRATIN

3 lbs cauliflower, cut into florets
2 lbs broccoli, cut into florets
1/2 cup plus 1 tbsp butter, divided
1/2 cup flour
2 1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
1/8 tsp ground red pepper
4 cups whole milk
1 cup grated Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese
1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
1 cup toasted bread crumbs
In a large Dutch oven, combine cauliflower and broccoli with enough water to cover. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Cook until tender, drain, and place in a 3-quart baking dish. Set aside.
Preheat oven to 350. In a large skillet, melt 1/2 cup butter over medium heat. Add flour; cook for 5 minutes, stirring constantly. Add salt, nutmeg, red pepper, and milk, stirring well. Cook for 5 to 10 minutes, stirring frequently, or until thickened and bubbly.
Add cheeses, stirring well. Pour mixture over cauliflower and broccoli. Combine bread crumbs and remaining 1 tbsp butter; sprinkle over vegetables. Bake for 45 minutes, or until lightly browned. Serves 8-10
