CHOCOLATE CHIP TURTLE BARS

Category: Bars

3/4 cup butter
1 1/4 cups packed brown sugar
2 tbsp milk
1 tbsp vanilla extract
1 egg
1 3/4 cup flour
1 tsp salt
3/4 tsp baking soda
1 1/2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
1 (14 oz) bag caramels, unwrapped
1 tbsp water

Preheat oven to 350. Grease a 13x9 inch baking pan with cooking spray. Combine first 4 ingredients in a bowl. Beat until well blended. Beat egg into mixture.

Combine dry ingredients and mix into creamed mixture just until blended. Stir in semi-sweet chocolate chips. Divide dough into thirds. Press two-thirds of dough into bottom of pan.

Combine caramels and water in a saucepan and stir constantly until melted and smooth. Spread caramel mixture over dough to within 1/2 inch of edge. Divide remaining dough into teaspoonfuls and drop evenly over the caramel layer. Bake at 350 for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown. DO NOT OVER BAKE. Loosen sides of pan with knife. Cool completely on a wire rack before cutting into bars.
