MAESTRO BBQ TOPPING

2 tbsp unsalted ubtter
1 large onion, finely chopped
1 clove garlic, minced
1 (16 oz) can tomato sauce
1 cup cider vinegar
1 cup V-8 juice
Finely slivered peel of 1/2 lemon
Juice of 1 lemon
1 bay leaf
1/2 tsp cayenne pepper
2 tbsp packed brown sugar
1/2 cup molasses

Heat to boiling; reduce heat and simmer, uncovered, until thickened, about 30 minutes.
