CHOCOLATE CARAMEL BARS

Crust
1 box German chocolate cake mix
1/2 cup butter
1 egg
Filling
1/2 cup butter
1/2 cup evaporated milk
1 (14 oz) pkg caramels, wrappers removed
1/2 cup chopped nuts, optional
Chocolate frosting
Preheat oven to 350. With hand, mix until crumbly with crust ingredients. Reserve 1 1/2 cups and set aside. Press remaining mixture into an ungreased 13x9 inch baking pan. Bake until crust appears dry. Allow to cool completely.
Filling: Mix together first 3 ingredients, stirring constantly until caramels melt. Pour over crust and sprinkle with nuts. Add crumb mixture loosely on top and bake until mixture looks dry again, about 20-30 minutes. Let cool 10 minutes. Loosen edge of bars and frost with icing. Allow to set at least 1 hours before cutting into bars to allow caramel to stiffen.
