SCALLOPS AU GRATIN

1 lb scallops
1 (4 oz) can sliced mushrooms
1/3 cup butter, melted
1/4 cup chopped onion
1/4 cup flour
Milk
2 tbsp chopped chives
Salt and pepper, to taste
3 tbsp bread crumbs
1 tbsp butter, melted
Dash paprika
Wash scallops and place in a saucepan with the liquid from the canned mushrooms and enough water to make 3/4 cup. Simmer scallops for 5 minutes and drain, reserving liquid.
Melt butter and cook onions until soft. Stir in flour. Add enough milk to the reserved liquid to make 2 cups. Gradually add the liquid to the saucepan and stir until smooth. Add mushrooms, chives, salt and pepper. Cook gently for 3-4 minutes. Add scallops. Remove the pan from the heat. Grease a baking dish or scallop shells and fill with mixture. Combine the bread crumbs and butter and sprinkle over casserole. Sprinkle with paprika. Bake at 350 for 15 minutes.
