AVERY ISLAND BARBECUE SAUCE

2 tbsp
1/4 cup chopped green pepper
1 (6 oz) can tomato paste
2 lemon slices
1 bay leaf
1 cup chopped onion
1 tbsp minced garlic
1/3 cup red wine vinegar
2 tsp Tabasco pepper sauce
1/2 tsp ground cloves
1/2 cup chopped celery with leaves
2 (14 1/2 oz) cans whole tomatoes, drained and coarsely chopped
3 tbsp molasses
2 tsp dry mustard
1/2 tsp ground allspice

In a large heavy nonaluminum saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter and saute the onion, celery, pepper, and garlic for 5 minutes, or until the onion is tender but not browned. Add the remaining ingredients. Cover and simmer for 30 minutes, until the sauce thickens, stirring occasionally. Discard the lemon slices and bay leaf. Brush the sauce on chicken, ribs, frankfurters, or hamburgers during grilling, broiling, or baking.
