CUTOUT CHRISTMAS COOKIES

1 cup butter, softened
1 cup sugar
2 3ggs, slightly beaten
1 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
3 1/2 cups flour
2 tsp ground cinnamon and baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 tsp nutmeg
1 tsp ground cloves
1 egg white, beaten
Colored decorating sugars

In a large bowl, cream butter and sugar until fluffy. Add egg and vanilla. In a medium bowl, combine dry ingredients and gradually add to creamed mixture; stir until soft dough forms. Divide dough in half. Wrap in plastic wrap and chill for 2 hours.

Preheat oven to 350. On a lightly floured surface, use a floured rolling pin to roll out half the dough to 1/8 inch thickness. Cut cookies with desired cutters. Place 2 inch apart on greased baking sheet, Decorate tops as desired. Bake 12-14 minutes or until edges begin to brown. Carefully brush with egg white; sprinkle with colored sugar. Return to oven for 3-5 minutes or until light brown. Transfer cookies to wire rack to cool Repeat with remaining dough. Stir in airtight container.
