1 cup molasses, shortening and sugar
1 egg
1 tsp vanilla
2 tsp baking soda
1/2 cup hot water
6 cups flour
1/2 tsp cloves
1 tsp cinnamon and salt
1/2 tsp ginger

Simmer molasses and shortening together for 15 minutes. While it simmers, cream together sugar, egg and vanilla. Mix how water with baking soda and add to sugar mixture, slowly blend in molasses and shortening mix when ready.

Sift together dry ingredients and slow add to wet ingredients, about 1 cup at a time, blending well. Roll out then and cut with cookie cutters, shape or place in a mold. Bake at 375 for 10 minutes.

Variation: Ginger Snaps: Flatten 2 inch balls of dough with bottom of a glass dipped in sugar and cinnamon and bake as above.
