BUTTERSCOTCH SQUARES

1 cup butter and packed brown sugar
1 egg yolk
1 tsp vanilla
2 cups flour, sifted
1/4 tsp salt
1 (6 oz) pkg butterscotch chips
1/4 cup light corn syrup
2 tbsp shortening
1 tbsp water
1/4 tsp salt
1/2 cup chopped pecans
Preheat oven to 350. Mix first 4 ingredients. Stir in flour and salt until dough is well blended. Spread into a greased 13x9 inch baking pan, leaving about 1 inch around edge of baking sheet. Bake 20-25 minutes or until nicely browned. (For a cooky crust, bake 25-30 minutes.) Crust will be soft.
While crust is baking, combine butterscotch chips and next 4 ingredients in a double, stirring until smooth. Remove from oven. Immediately place separate squares of butterscotch topping on top. Spread over entire surface. Sprinkle with nuts. Cut into squares while warm.
