WHOLE WHEAT PASTA WITH PARMESAN AND BROCCOLI

1 bunch broccoli (about 1 1/4 lbs before trimming)
1 large onion, chopped
3 large cloves garlic, chopped finely
3 tbsp olive oil
1 cup chicken or vegetable broth
8 oz whole wheat pasta cooked according to pkg directions
1 cup (3 oz) grated Parmesan cheese
1/8 tsp hot red pepper flakes or to taste
Salt
Freshly ground black pepper
Trim broccoli; peel stalks. Coarsely chop; reserve. In a large frying pan, saute onion and garlic in oil until soft, about 5 minutes. Stir in broccoli; stir-fry over medium-high heat until broccoli turns bright green, about 3 minutes.
Stir in broth; reduce liquid over high heat until broccoli is tender-crisp and just a little liquid remains. Stir in cooked pasta, then Parmesan and hot pepper flakes. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Serves 4
