Swedish Meatballs
Category: Recipes
Ingredients:
1 1/2 cups Panko bread crumbs
1 cup half-and-half
1 ground beef
1 pound ground pork, or use all beef
2 large eggs, slightly beaten
1 medium onion, chopped fine
1/8 teaspoon nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon allspice
1 1/2 teaspoons salt, divided
3 cups beef broth
3 tablespoons flour
3 tablespoons melted butter
1/2 cup sour cream or heavy whipping cream
Directions:
Soak bread crumbs in milk for 5 minutes in a large mixing bowl. Add the ground beef and pork, eggs, onion, salt, nutmeg, and allspice; mix well. Shape into 1-inch meatballs.
Place the meatballs on a rack in a sheet pan and bake for 20-25 minutes at 400° or until cooked through. They should register at least 160° F on an instant-read thermometer inserted into the center of a meatball.
Put the browned meatballs in large ovenproof pan (12"-14" skillet). Add 2 cup beef broth and cover pan with foil.
Cook for 1 hour at 300°.
To thicken gravy combine butter and flour to make a smooth paste. Add paste to remaining 1 cup beef broth, mic well, and pour over meatballs.
Cover with foil and return to oven for about 30 minutes at 300°
Remove the meatballs with a slotted spoon. Stir sour cream or cream into the broth until smooth.
Return meatballs to pan and stir meatballs in sauce over med-low heat on stove top for about 5 minutes
Serve with noodles or potatoes (Actually great with french fries)..
