Chocolate Snowballs
Category: Recipes
This is from a magazine my mother bought in 1963 ("Helps for the Holiday Season-selections from 'Family circle'"), the year before I was born (1963)...I have the original magazine, and we have been making these cookies for YEARS!!
They are truly FABULOUS!
Chocolate Snowballs
('They're sugary white outside, dark chocolate cake-like inside. Bake some to pack for gifts.')
Bake at 350 Degrees for 8 min
Makes about 5 dozen (not NEARLY enough)
2 cups sifted flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
3/4 cup (1 1/2 sticks) butter or margarine (I prefer butter)
3/4 cup firmly packed brown sugar
2 squares unsweetened chocolate, melted
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/4 cup milk
10x (confectioners' powdered) sugar
1. Measure dry ingredients into sifter
2. Cream butter or margarine with brown sugar until light in medium-size bowl: beat in melted chocolate, egg, vanilla, and milk. Sift in dry ingredients, a little at a time, blending well to make a stiff dough. Chill overnight or until firm enough to handle.
3. Roll dough, a teaspoonful at a time, into marble-size balls: place about 2 inches apart on ungreased cookie sheets.
4. Bake in moderate oven (350 degrees) 8 minutes or until tops are crackled. Remove carefully from cookie sheets; roll in 10x sugar while still hot. Cool on wire racks, then roll again in 10x sugar to make a generous white coating.
The best Christmas Cookies God ever created!! IMHO.
