DEVILS FOOD CAKE

3 cups sifted flour
2 cups sugar
6 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa
2 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
2/3 cup melted shortning
2 tablespoon white vinegar
2 teaspoons vanilla
2 cup cold water

Measure flour, sugar, cocoa, baking soda and salt into a sifter. Sift ingredients together twice. The last time into an ungreased metal baking pan 13x11. (cocoa should be well mixed.) Make three depressions into mixture. In one pour in melted shortning. In the second vinegar. In the third place vanilla. Pour cold water over all. Mix with a fork, until all dry ingredients disappear. Batter will be very thin. Bake at 350 degree F. for 30- 40 minutes until skewer placed in center of the cake comes out clean. This is a dark soft cake. Cool in pan. Do not remove from the pan frost with your favorite icing.
