Orange slice cake

1 cup butter
2 cups sugar
4 eggs
1 lb orange slice candy, chopped
1 pkg chopped dates
2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts
3 1/2 cup sifted plain flour
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 cup buttermilk
1 (6 oz) can flaked coconut
1/2 cup orange juice
1 cup confectioners sugar
Cream butter and sugar. Add eggs, one at a time, mix well. In separate bowl, combine candy, dates, nuts and coconut. Add 1/2 cup flour to coat these ingredients. Add baking soda to buttermilk and set aside. Sift flour and salt together. Combine butter/sugar/egg mixture mixture with flour and milk. Blend at medium speed 5 minutes. With spoon, add remaining ingredients (nut/coconut mixture; blend well.
Bake at 250 F for 2 1/2 hours in tube pan. Remove from oven and while cake is still in pan, pour orange juice and confectioners' sugar (blended together) over cake. Let cake stand in pan overnight.
