Serves/Makes: 4
Ready in: < 30 minutes

  • 1 can (8 ounce size) pineapple slices, undrained
  • 3/4 cup teriyaki sauce
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 red onion, sliced
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 4 lettuce leaves
  • 4 hamburger buns
  • 4 slices Swiss cheese
  • 4 slices cooked bacon

If grilling the burgers, preheat the grill to medium heat.

Drain the pineapple juice into a bowl. Whisk the teriyaki sauce into the pineapple juice, mixing until smooth.

Transfer 3 tablespoons of the pineapple-teriyaki mixture to a zip-top plastic bag. Add the pineapple slices to the bag, squeeze out the air and seal the bag. Turn the bag to coat the pineapple slices in the mixture. Set aside.

Form the ground beef into equal-sized patties and place in a single layer in a 8x8-inch baking dish or other shallow container. Pour the remaining pineapple-teriyaki mixture over the burgers. Let the burgers marinate at room temperature for 5 minutes. Gently turn the burgers over and spoon the sauce mixture over them. Let marinate for another 5 minutes.

Heat the butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced red onion and cook, stirring gently, for 5 minutes or until tender.

Remove the burgers from the marinade. If grilling, place the burgers on the grill and cook until the desired doneness, turning as needed during the cooking time. Remove the pineapple from the marinade and place the slices directly on the grill. Cook until heated through.

If pan-frying the burgers, heat a large, greased skillet over medium-high heat. Add the burgers and cook for 1-2 minutes per side. Reduce the heat to medium and cook, turning as needed, until they are the desired doneness. You can also cook the burgers on a broiler pan under the broiler, if desired. Add the drained, marinated pineapple slices to the skillet or broiler pan and cook until heated through.

To assemble the Hawaiian burgers layer lettuce leaves on the bottom of each hamburger bun. Top with the cooked burger, Swiss cheese, cooked pineapple slice, and bacon. Top with the burger bun and serve immediately with any additional desired condiments.
