1 pound macaroni
2 quarts 2% milk
4 tablespoons (1/2 stick) butter
1 tablespoon plus 1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon white pepper
1/2 teaspoon onion powder
1/2 cup cornstarch, dissolved in 1/2 cup cold water
1 1/4 pounds (5 cups) shredded sharp cheddar cheese (divided)

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Cook macaroni according to package directions. Rinse and drain.

While pasta cooks, make cream sauce. In large saucepan, heat milk to almost a boil. Add butter, salt, white pepper and onion powder. Using a whisk, stir in cornstarch-water mixture. Cook until mixture is thickened, about 2 minutes. Remove cream sauce from heat and stir in 4 cups of the cheese. Mix until cheese melts. Stir in cooked macaroni.

Pour into a greased 15-by-10-inch baking dish. Top with remaining 1 cup cheese. Bake, uncovered, in preheated oven 40 to 50 minutes or until top is light golden brown and mixture is bubbly. Remove from heat and let sit about 5 minutes before serving. Makes 8 to 10 servings
