Mix 2 oz red food coloring with 2 tbsp instant cocoa. Let stand.
Cream together:
1/2 cup shortening
1 1/2 cups sugar
2 eggs, one at a time, beating after each addition
1 tsp vanilla extract
Add:
1 cup buttermilk
Sift together:
1 tsp salt and baking soda
2 1/4 cup cake flour
Add the foodl coloring mixture last. Mix well. Pour the batter into 2 greased and floured 9 inch cake pans. Bake at 350 for 25-30 minutes. Cool; split each layer and frost. Keep refrigerated.
Mock Whipped Cream Frosting
Cook:
1 1/2 cups milk
5 tbsp flour
Cook until mixture resembles a thick white sauce. Put in refrigerator until cold.
Cream together into a thick creamed mixture:
1 1/2 cups butter
1 1/2 cup sugar
1 tsp vanilla extract
Refrigerate until ready to use.
Add the cold flour mixture to the cream mixture a little at a time. Keep beating until is resembles whipped cream. (Be sure to beat the 2 mixes together thoroughly or they will taste grainy.) Put in refrigerator until time to frost cake. Make sure the cakes are completely cold before you divide the layer. Frost each layer then put one layer on top of the other.
