1 cup butter, softened
1 1/4 cups sugar
2 eggs
2 (1 oz) squares unsweetened chocolate, melted
1/2 tsp vanilla
2 2/3 cups flour
2 tsp cream of tartar
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 cup sugar

Beat butter with sugar until creamy. Beat in eggs; add melted chocolate and vanilla. Mix dry ingredients and stir into chocolate mixture; blend well. Chill dough and shape into balls. Roll balls into sugar and place about 2 inch apart on an ungreased baking sheet. Bake at 400 for 8-10 minutes. Remove from baking sheet while warm.

Variation: Omit chocolate. Roll balls of dough in a mixture of 1/4 cup sugar and 1 tbsp cinnamon; bake as directed.
