Serves/Makes: 20
Ready in: 1-2 hrs
- 1 box (15-18 ounce size) German chocolate cake mix, plus ingredients to prepare
- 1 box (15-18 ounce size) white cake mix, plus ingredients to prepare
- 2 packages (4-serving size) instant vanilla pudding mix
- 1 package (12 ounce size) vanilla sandwich cookies
- 3 drops green food coloring
- 1 package (12 ounce size) tootsie rolls, unwrapped
Preheat the oven to the temperature recommended on the cake mix packages. Prepare the German chocolate and white cake mixes as directed and bake in 9x13-inch pans. Let cool. While the cakes are baking prepare the pudding mix as directed on package and chill until ready to assemble the dessert. Pulverize the sandwich cookies in small batches in a food processor until the are the consistency of fine crumbs. Remove 1/4 cup of the cookie crumbles and add the green food coloring to it. Stir well to mix evenly. Crumble the cooled cakes into a large bowl. Toss with half of the uncolored crushed cookies and the chilled pudding, adding only enough pudding until it's moist but not soggy (you probably won't use all the pudding). Put the cake mixture into a new, washed kitty litter box. Optionally, you can use a clean kitty litter liner if you wish. Place half of the unwrapped tootsie rolls on a microwave safe plate. Heat for 15 second intervals until soft and pliable (but not melted). Shape the soft tootsie rolls so that the ends are not blunt and then curve them slightly. Gently bury the tootsie rolls randomly in the cake mixture. Sprinkle the top of the cake with the remaining uncolored cookie crumbs. Lightly sprinkle some of the green crumbs over the top. Heat 3-4 of the remaining tootsie rolls until almost completely melted. Place the melted masses on top of the cake and sprinkle with some more of the green crumbs. Heat the remaining tootsie rolls until soft and pliable and shape as before. Place on top of the cake randomly, hanging one of them off the edge of the pan so it looks like the cat missed the mark. Sprinkle the top with any remaining crumbs. Serve the kitty litter cake with a new, clean, kitty litter pooper scooper.
