Prep Time: Cook Time: Total Time:
cup flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
1/3 cup warm water
1 Tbsp. vegetable shortening or lard
Oil for frying
Directions:
"Fried Dough, dinner of champions!"
You will need: a deep fryer
Mix flour, baking powder and salt. Cut in shortening until mix is mealy. Slowly stir in warm water to form a ragged dough.
Turn dough out onto a floured board and knead 2 minutes, or until smooth. Cover with a towel, and let rest for 15 minutes.
Heat oil in a deep skillet to 375 F. Divide dough into 4 equal balls, and roll the first one out into a 5 inch circle. Keep it from puffing out by using a sharp knife to cut 4 diagonal long slits though the dough (unless you like it all puffed out!).
Ease the dough into the hot fat. Cook for 30 seconds until light brown, then turn it and cook the other side the same way. Drain on paper towels. Cook other circles, and serve immediately. Serve with your favorite toppings: powdered sugar or red sauce and shake-em cheese.
